Payday Super changes when super leaves your bank account, not how much you pay. Since 1 July 2026, employers in Australia must pay superannuation every payday, and it must reach the employee's fund within 7 business days. For a business that used to hold three months of super and pay it on the quarterly due date, that is a permanent change to cash flow. The cost is the same. The timing has moved forward, and the buffer you were quietly using is gone.

The plain version: super used to behave like a short interest-free loan from your staff. Now it behaves like wages. If your cash forecast still treats it as a quarterly bill, the forecast is wrong.

What changed

Payday Super in one paragraph

From 1 July 2026, the quarterly super due dates were replaced by payment on each payday. The contribution has to land in the employee's fund, with enough information for the fund to allocate it, within 7 business days after payday, with some extended deadlines such as for new employees. The ATO's Small Business Superannuation Clearing House closed on 1 July 2026, so businesses that used it needed a new way to pay. Late or missing super can trigger the Super Guarantee Charge, now with penalties of 25 or 50 per cent of the unpaid charge. Check the detail on the ATO's Payday Super page, and with your accountant or bookkeeper.

The impact

The impact of Payday Super on small business cash flow

Three things happen at once, and most businesses only notice the first.

The float disappears. Under the old rules, super for July, August and September was not due until late October. A business with a $90,000 quarterly super bill had, on average, around two months of that money sitting in the account before it was due. That float has gone, once, and it does not come back. For many owner-led businesses it was the difference between a comfortable month and a tight one, and nobody had named it.

Every pay run gets heavier. A fortnightly pay run now carries wages, PAYG withholding and super together. If your customers pay on 30 or 60 day terms, the gap between paying people and getting paid for their work has widened.

Mistakes cost more, faster. Quarterly payment gave you three months to notice an error. Payday payment gives you days. A missed super file or a rejected contribution is now a compliance problem within the week, not a tidy-up at quarter end.

Same cost, earlier cash. Under the quarterly rules, a quarter's super left the account in one payment after the quarter closed. Under Payday Super it leaves with every pay run, so the float in between is gone.

What to do

How to put Payday Super into a 13-week cash flow forecast

The fix is not complicated, but it has to be done deliberately.

Move super onto the payroll line. In your 13-week cash flow forecast, super should sit in the same week as each pay run, not in a quarterly lump. If you forecast in Xero or a spreadsheet, rebuild the payroll row so wages, PAYG and super move together.

Re-test your lowest week. Find the lowest closing balance in the next 13 weeks. If it fell when you moved super, that is the real number your business now runs on. Decide now whether it is safe, rather than finding out in the week it arrives.

Line up pay runs and customer receipts. If your biggest customers pay at month end and you pay staff fortnightly, look at which pay runs fall just before receipts land. Small changes help: invoicing on completion rather than at month end, shorter terms for new customers, or progress claims timed to the pay cycle.

Name the owner. Someone has to confirm every pay run that super has gone and has been accepted by the funds. In a business without a finance manager this usually falls to the bookkeeper or the owner. Write it into their week, with a check that the clearing service or payroll system has not rejected a contribution.

Two more cash timing changes for Australian small businesses

Payday Super is not the only change to when money moves. Card surcharges on eftpos, Mastercard and Visa were banned from 1 October 2026, which moves the card fee into your price and your margin (we cover that in how to price the fee back in). And the ATO has said it will stop accepting credit card payments for tax, after first announcing 30 November 2026 and then extending the transition to 30 June 2027. If your business has used a credit card to bridge a BAS or a tax payment, that bridge has an end date. Put it in the forecast now so it is a plan, not a surprise.

How Ajility does it

A cash forecast that runs every week

Ajility's Rolling Cash Forecast builds a 13-week cash view from your own Xero data, puts super, PAYG, BAS and claim timing in the weeks they actually hit, and hands it to a named owner who updates it weekly. Where the forecast shows a structural gap rather than a timing gap, the next step is a Full Diagnostic, because a business that runs out of cash on a correct forecast usually has a pricing, margin or overhead problem, not a cash problem. Prices are published on the packages page.

Questions founders ask

Common questions

When did Payday Super start in Australia?

Payday Super started on 1 July 2026. From that date employers must pay super on each payday, and it must reach the employee's fund within 7 business days, with some extended deadlines, such as for new employees. The last quarterly payment, for the quarter ending 30 June 2026, was due by 28 July 2026.

Does Payday Super cost my business more?

Not in the amount of super. The Super Guarantee rate is the same. What changes is timing: super leaves your account every pay run instead of once a quarter, so the cash you used to hold for up to three months is gone. For many small businesses that is a one-off drop in available cash that has to be planned for.

What happened to the Small Business Superannuation Clearing House?

The ATO's Small Business Superannuation Clearing House closed permanently on 1 July 2026. Businesses that used it now pay through their payroll software, their default fund's clearing service or a commercial clearing house. Check that your chosen option can meet the 7 business day deadline.

What happens if super is paid late under Payday Super?

If the fund does not receive the contribution within the deadline, the Super Guarantee Charge can apply. The ATO has changed the penalty to 25 or 50 per cent of the unpaid charge, depending on prior penalties. Talk to your accountant or the ATO about your specific situation.

How do I show Payday Super in a cash flow forecast?

Put super in the same week as each pay run, alongside wages and PAYG withholding, then check your lowest closing balance over the next 13 weeks. If that number fell, it is the real cash level your business now operates on.
